Chiefly on a proposed "Sadlers Wells [Theatre] project." Shaw writes: "It would be impossible to conceive anything more stupefyingly absurd. Thank God for the Charity Commissioners! [...] All my life I have been in demand as a comic opera librettist. D'Oyly Carte said I need not ever have Sullivan if I preferred anyone else. [The theatrical producer] George Edwards proposed the Duchess of Dantzig to me. Marion Chappell still writes me from time to time, undeterred by a quarter century of failure. For a comic opera for M[...?] to finance. And that masterpiece has never been written. What chance is there for Reynaldo [Hahn]? No: that book will not fight. Have you ever tried Madeira? [...] Also I learned the tango, the only discoverable dance in the modern floor trotting [...].
